A Symposium, Reanimating Huddersfield Town Centre, which will take place on Friday 25 October, 2-6pm at MakerSkate

This interactive event will bring together local businesses, cultural leaders, and community stakeholders to explore the transformative role of culture in revitalising our town centre.

Key themes include envisioning the future of town centres, the impact of culture on public spaces, encouraging better collaboration among town centre players and engaging communities and families in the town centre offer.

We are delighted to be able to include a screening of the recent documentary: MakerWorld, followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Maire Tracey. The film is told through the lens of the parents who attend MakerWorld with their children and celebrates the benefits of joint creative endeavour – from stress relief to confidence and from social mobility to inclusivity.

With growing recognition of the impact that cultural activity has on the lives of people, communities and places, we are eager to share and discuss how our collaborative efforts are reimagining Huddersfield through a cultural lens – and how we can do more. Your insights and participation would be invaluable to us as we work together to shape a town centre that’s relevant to the people using it.

We would love it if you could join us in what we hope will be an engaging and meaningful discussion around how we can continue to breathe new life into Huddersfield town centre.

You are also welcome to a family screening of MakerSkate, a documentary by Maire Tracey – Saturday 26th October 2.00pm at MakerSkate, Piazza Centre

This short film tells the story of free drop-in arts sessions for children, held in an empty shopping unit in Huddersfield town centre. Set against the background of a town struggling to reinvent itself in a post-Covid world, Makerworld offers a utopian glimpse of how town centres
could exist if they replaced consumerism with community.

Told through the lens of the parents who attend the weekly sessions with their children, we hear about the benefits of community art – from stress relief to confidence and from social mobility to
inclusivity.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Maire Tracey. MakerWorld activities will be taking place from 11am to 3pm.
